The Old Man of Coniston

via The Bell & Low Water Beck

 Location:

Coniston

Average Time Taken:

8.5 hours

Level:

Fit & able adults (you will be on the go for up to 9 hours over difficult terrain with a mixture of climbing and hiking. Please don’t make this your first experience in the great outdoors).

The location:

This mountaineering extravaganza starts from the town of Coniston. We will then head onto the fells and scale the flanks of one of the most well-known and most sought after mountains in the Lake District – ‘The Old Man of Coniston’.

What’s involved?

You will ascend the Old Man of Coniston in the most extreme way possible, scaling ‘The Bell’ & ‘Low Water Beck’ along the way – all rock scrambles up to a grade of III. This is by far the best way to ascend this mountain and a sure way of avoiding the crowds.

A great ALL weather activity.

What’s provided?

  • A helmet
  • A harness
  • All scrambling hardware

What to bring:

  • A small day sack
  • Warm & waterproof clothing
  • Hiking boots/approach shoes
  • Food & water
  • Gloves (optional)

How long will it last?

The average time taken is somewhere in the region of 8 ½ hours. This depends hugely on ability, weather conditions and fitness.

What time of year?

  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Autumn

  Typical run time:

9-6 (we are quite flexible on the start time)

Meeting location:

We will meet in the ‘Pay & Display’ car park on Old Furness Road, Coniston, LA21 8HU. From here we will be driving another 5 minutes to the location so DON’T PAY FOR PARKING.

Pros & cons:

This activity has an instructor/participant ratio of 1:2 so there cannot be more than two persons in your party.

It’s a great ‘quiet’ way of ascending this popular peak and its hands down the most exciting way.
